On Thursday (October 26th), BP Pulse, the electric vehicle charger division of BP, ordered a $100 million Tesla ultra high speed charger and is preparing to launch it in the United States.
This investment will promote the expansion of the BP Pulse public network across the United States. For Tesla, this marks the first time it has deployed its charging system on an independent network.
In addition, BP Pulse plans to invest up to $1 billion in charging stations across the United States by 2030, and the newly announced order will be the first step of the plan.
This also provides a new source of revenue for Tesla, the leader in the electric vehicle market. Rebecca Tinucci, senior director of charging infrastructure at Tesla, said in a statement, "Selling our fast charging hardware is a new step forward for us, and we hope to expand in this area
BP's Greater Ambition
BP has revealed that Tesla chargers will be launched as early as 2024 under various brands under BP, including Travel Centers of America and Amoco, and in third-party locations through partnerships with rental platforms such as Hertz.
Just last month, car rental giant Hertz announced a memorandum of understanding with BP Pulse to establish a charging station network in the United States and install thousands of charging stations at Hertz stations across the country.
Interestingly, Hertz also signed an agreement to purchase Tesla Motors.
BP added that the first batch of charging stations will be installed in Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington.
Richard Bartlett, Global CEO of BP Pulse, said, "This is an important step forward in our ambition to establish a high-speed and open charging infrastructure in the United States
It is reported that the Tesla Ultra Fast Charger with an output power of 250 kW will be installed and operated by BP Pulse, and will be compatible with Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors to charge electric vehicles from other car manufacturers.
Currently, car manufacturers are adopting Tesla's NACS standard, bringing Tesla's charging system closer to becoming an industry standard and gradually phasing out its competitor CCS.
