The case of old users suing iQiyi for restricting screen casting has reached its final verdict. On November 6th, the plaintiff Zhu Yuan told a reporter from Nandu that the second instance of the case upheld the first instance judgment, which stated that iQiyi must continue to provide high-definition screen mirroring during the validity period of the old members and compensate for 41 days of golden membership time. He himself respects the recognition of the effective judgment. According to a previous report by Southern Metropolis Daily, Zhu Yuan stated that the core demand of his lawsuit is "to hope that all old members can continue their high-definition screen mirroring rights as long as they keep subscribing
The civil judgment provided by Zhu Yuan.
On the 6th, Zhu Yuan, a reporter from Southern Metropolis Daily, stated that he received the second instance judgment on the restriction of screen casting by iQiyi on the same day. The second instance upheld the first instance judgment, which required iQiyi to continue providing high-definition screen casting during the validity period of old members and compensate for 41 days of golden membership time.
Zhu Yuan said, "I respect the determination of the effective judgment. Although my judgment is a case, as a platform, iQiyi is aimed at all members in the same situation. I hope that iQiyi can make equal compensation to all injured members through public announcement after the effective judgment is made
According to the civil judgment provided by Zhu Yuan, the Southern Metropolis Daily reporter learned that Zhu Yuan has filed an appeal and requested a legal amendment to the judgment stating that "as a Golden VIP member of iQiyi, Zhu Yuan enjoys high-definition screen mirroring rights and is not subject to clarity restrictions before September 15, 2025. IQiyi Company appeals to revoke the first instance judgment and, in accordance with the law, to dismiss all of Zhu Yuan's claims in the first instance.
Southern Metropolis Daily previously reported that in January last year, Zhu Yuan, a loyal user of iQiyi from Guangdong, discovered that iQiyi had limited the screen mirroring clarity of its golden membership to 480P, and if higher clarity was required, it must be upgraded to a higher-level membership. After unsuccessful communication with iQIYI customer service, Zhu Yuan believed that the unilateral change of contract terms by iQIYI had constituted a breach of contract and should bear the liability for breach of contract, so he took iQIYI to the court for filing by the Beijing Internet Court.
On February 20 of the same year, iQiyi announced that it would optimize its membership services and restore 720P and 1080P resolution screen mirroring services for its Gold VIP members who were still subscribed on February 20, 2023. Members with monthly, quarterly, or annual membership cards can use them until the end of this order; Members who subscribe continuously for monthly, quarterly, or yearly subscriptions can continue to use it.
On March 1, 2023, a reporter from Nandu learned that Gong Yu, CEO of iQiyi, responded to the criticism of iQiyi's restrictions on screen casting during a media interview, stating that there must have been his own mistake and that he did not think carefully about the membership plan at the beginning. After careful research, the core still needs to protect the interests and emotions of member consumers, so iQiyi has stopped restricting old members from casting screens.
On July 2 this year, the reporter from Nandu learned from Zhu Yuanchu that the Beijing Internet Court ruled that the plaintiff enjoyed 720P and 1080P HD rights and interests before July 15, 2025, and iQiyi compensated the plaintiff for 41 days of gold VIP membership. On the same day, Zhu Yuan issued a statement stating that the core demand of his lawsuit is that he hopes all old members can continue their high-definition screen casting rights as long as they keep subscribing. Unfortunately, the first trial did not support this and it has not been determined whether to appeal on this matter.
