In his meeting with the Chinese leader, Schumer criticized the Chinese government's initial response to the Israeli conflict. China's foreign ministry on Sunday called for peace after Hamas, the militant group that controls the Gaza Strip, launched attacks on Israel over the weekend, but refrained from any criticism of the attacks.
"I say this with respect, but I am disappointed by the statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, which failed to express sympathy or support for the Israeli people at this tragic time," Schumer said.

Mr. Schumer's trip, which included meetings with officials from China's foreign and commerce ministries, comes as China and the United States seek to increase engagement to stem a slide in relations. But the flare-up in Israel now threatens to create new rifts between the two countries, which already have deep-seated differences over the war in Ukraine and many other issues.
