Tesla's Vice President of External Affairs, Tao Lin, later stated on Weibo that the Shanghai Gigafactory has reached a new milestone - the production of its 3 millionth vehicle.
Tesla and Tao Lin both mentioned on Weibo that Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory took 32 months to produce from 0 to 1 million vehicles; From 2 million to 3 million vehicles, it only took 13 months. From 32 months to 13 months, the time it takes for Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory to produce one million electric vehicles is also getting shorter and shorter.
The Shanghai Gigafactory is Tesla's first overseas factory and also its most efficient factory, capable of producing a complete vehicle in just over 30 seconds. In less than 5 years, the factory has produced 3 million complete vehicles.
The first complete vehicle of Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory was produced in December 2019, the one millionth was produced on August 13, 2022, and the two millionth was produced on September 6 last year.
Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory was established in the Lingang area in 2018 and officially started construction in 2019. It was completed, put into operation, and launched in the same year, setting an industry record and Shanghai speed.
After the first phase started construction and production of Model 3 in 2019, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory also began the construction of the second phase the following year, which will be used to produce Model Y.
Among Tesla's current four vehicle factories, the Shanghai Gigafactory that produces both Model 3 and Model Y has the highest production capacity. In the second quarter financial report released on July 23, they disclosed that the Shanghai Gigafactory has the ability to produce over 950000 electric vehicles annually, significantly higher than the 650000 vehicles produced by the Fremont factory in California, and also higher than the 375000 vehicles produced by the Berlin Gigafactory and the Texas Gigafactory.
The Shanghai Gigafactory is also Tesla's global export center, exporting to multiple countries in Asia Pacific and Europe, with a total of 1 million vehicles. That is to say, one-third of Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory's production capacity is sold to overseas markets.
The latest data shows that Tesla has delivered approximately 1.3 million vehicles in the first three quarters of 2024. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the Shanghai Gigafactory delivered 675000 vehicles in the first three quarters of this year, accounting for more than half of Tesla's global deliveries in the first three quarters.
In March of this year, Tesla became the world's first company to break through the production milestone of 6 million pure electric vehicles, with the Shanghai Gigafactory contributing nearly half of its production capacity.
