On the afternoon of May 23, 2024, the opening ceremony of Tesla's Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory was held in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai. The negotiation and signing of the Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory only took one month, once again refreshing the "port speed".
The factory has the ability to produce over 950000 pure electric vehicles annually and is an important production base and export center for Tesla worldwide.
The Tesla Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory is Tesla's first energy storage super factory outside of the United States, and it is also another large-scale investment project in China since Tesla's entry into China ten years ago, following the Shanghai Super Factory.
This factory not only represents another important position of Tesla in the global energy storage layout, but also serves as a strong proof of its key role in the global energy transformation trend. As a major energy project in Shanghai, the construction of the Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory will help Shanghai build a green energy system and promote the city's development towards a more environmentally friendly and sustainable direction.
After the groundbreaking ceremony, Lingang Group also signed the contract with Tesla for the first batch of ultra large electrochemical commercial energy storage system Megapack in China, marking the official start of Tesla's energy storage business in China.
In 2019, in the hot land of Lingang in Shanghai, Tesla's Shanghai Superfactory created "Shanghai Speed" and "Tesla Speed" with "construction started, production started, and delivery made in the same year". Now, Tesla's Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory has once again demonstrated "Tesla Speed" with its efficient operational capabilities.
Tesla's Shanghai Energy Storage Super Factory is expected to start production in the first quarter of 2025. After production, the Megapack, a large-scale electrochemical commercial energy storage system, will produce up to 10000 units, with a storage capacity of nearly 40 gigawatt hours (1 gigawatt hour=1000 megawatt hours).
According to statistics from the National Energy Administration, the total electricity consumption in China in 2023 was 9224.1 billion kilowatt hours. Assuming that the electricity generated by sustainable energy sources such as photovoltaics and wind power is stored and then Megapack is used to power the entire China, only about 0.1% of the Taklamakan Desert area needs to be deployed with Megapack, which is enough to store the annual electricity consumption of 1.4 billion Chinese people.
