South Korea's telecom regulator plans to fine Alphabet's (GOOG) Google and Apple Inc. (AAPL) a combined $51 million for allegedly abusing their market dominance and violating the country's mobile payment regulations.
The Korea Broadcasting and Communications Commission said Friday that the two U.S. tech giants had forced app developers to use their in-app payment methods instead of those of external competitors.
Google and Apple were also found to have unfairly delayed app-related reviews in order to enforce the improper practice, the Korea Broadcasting and Communications Commission said.
Google and Apple will be fined 47.6 billion won ($35.4 million) and 20.5 billion won, respectively, for allegedly violating South Korea's fair trade rules, the commission said.
Google and Apple weren't immediately available for comment.
South Korea enacted new telecom regulations in 2021 that prohibit app store platform operators from abusing their market dominance.
