What is the attitude of American tech giants towards Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology? Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg publicly expressed his cautious stance on brain computer chips in the latest interview.
The CEO of Meta discussed brain computer interface technology in a podcast on Friday (February 16th) and stated that he will not attempt this technology for the time being.
Zuckerberg pointed out, "One of the crazier technologies we are researching is neural interfaces. Maybe there will be this technology in the future, but I don't want to use its first generation version."
He continued, "I think this technology still needs to be further matured, let's wait until it doesn't need to be upgraded every year."
Although he did not specifically mention any company, the most well-known company in the field of brain computer interfaces is Neuralink, a subsidiary of Elon Musk.
Last month, Neuralink company implanted its chips into the brains of human patients for the first time. Musk immediately posted that the patient had "recovered well" and the initial results were encouraging.
Neuralink's brain computer interface device is an invasive brain implant that controls external devices through neural signals, helping severely paralyzed patients recover their ability to communicate with the outside world and helping to "treat" patients with autism and schizophrenia.
Musk previously stated that Neuralink's short-term goal is to help paralyzed individuals achieve mental typing function, and in the future, it will also enable paralyzed individuals to walk, blind people to see, and ultimately achieve a "human-machine symbiosis".
Scientists in related fields are skeptical about whether Neuralink's technology can "solve" brain abnormalities or alter its developmental structure, but they believe it is more likely to help paralyzed patients regain walking ability.
As for whether Meta is involved in the field of brain computing, Zuckerberg mentioned that the company is developing a wristband that combines artificial intelligence and can respond to your gestures, such as sending text messages to friends through user gestures.
He said, "In the future, you can basically type and control operations by thinking about how to move your hands."
In addition, earlier last year, it was reported that Meta was developing a system to read ideas from the human brain. This project uses artificial intelligence to help scientists study neurons in the brain. Through a simulated human brain model, human brain activity can be directly converted into text without the need for typing or speech input.
