Recently, the Fourth World Food Forum was grandly held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy. At the Science and Innovation Forum on Agricultural Frontier Innovation and Technological Achievements, Pinduoduo, a new e-commerce platform from China, shared its practical experience in innovative development of digital agriculture as a representative of Asian enterprises.
On the road to promoting the transformation and development of various links in the agricultural value chain, we have invested abundant human and material resources. Not long ago, we launched the 'Billion Reduction and Exemption' plan to reduce the burden on high-quality businesses and accelerate the integration of more high-quality goods into the national market, including remote areas, "said Wang Haiwei, Vice President of Enterprise Development at Pinduoduo." We will work together with young talents to further leverage our digital advantages and help rural areas improve production and life
It is reported that the 2024 World Food Forum continues the tradition of previous sessions, advocating for cooperation and co creation among the three generations of old, middle-aged, and young. It focuses on the key supporting elements of the transformation of the agricultural food system and launches a series of flagship forum activities: the Global Youth Action Forum, the Science and Innovation Forum, and the "Hand in Hand" Investment Forum. The aim is to empower youth growth, promote innovation breakthroughs, vigorously leverage investment, and encourage all parties to work together and participate enthusiastically to build a sustainable future.
Sharing technology for global benefit
The Science and Innovation Forum was initiated by Qu Dongyu, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in 2022. Its aim is to bring together globally renowned scientists, innovation experts, policy makers, as well as representatives from small-scale producers, indigenous peoples, women, youth, and the private sector, encouraging the adoption of diverse scientific perspectives, promoting inclusive discussions, and exploring ways for scientific innovation to drive the transformation of agricultural food systems.
This year's Science and Innovation Forum, with the theme of "Promoting inclusive technological innovation, facilitating the transformation of the agricultural food system, and leaving no one behind," focused on three major themes: biotechnology, grassroots driven innovation, and digital agriculture. Multiple technical conferences were held to provide strong support for addressing the many challenges faced by the agricultural food system.

The forum emphasized the need to strive to narrow the gap in technological innovation between low - and middle-income countries, ensure that technological progress benefits the world, and allow everyone to share the development opportunities brought by technological innovation. It attracted guests including the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Grossi, the 2019 Nobel laureate in economics, Michael Kramer, and the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Carlos Nobre.
Pinduoduo was invited to speak as a representative of Asian companies at the "Digital Agriculture Changers in Action" themed discussion of the Science and Innovation Forum. Wang Haiwei shared Pinduoduo's practical experience in supporting cutting-edge technological innovation and application in digital agriculture, and promoting rural revitalization through the use of digital technology to benefit businesses and farmers, as well as collaborating with young talents to promote agricultural digital transformation. This enabled global agricultural entrepreneurs and investors to learn about the latest achievements in Asian digital agriculture.
Pinduoduo, with agriculture as its long-term core strategy, was born in the era of mobile Internet. Since its establishment, it has insisted on applying digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data to all links of the agricultural industry chain.
Pinduoduo platform pioneered the "agricultural land cloud consolidation" model, which combines dispersed agricultural production capacity and agricultural product demand in the "cloud" to facilitate direct connection between production and consumption; Another example is the launch of "Buy More Vegetables" to match local demand with surrounding supply, which not only meets the growing demand for immediate consumption, but also improves the efficiency of agricultural product circulation. As of now, Pinduoduo has directly connected more than 1000 agricultural production areas across the country, driving over 16 million agricultural producers to participate in the digital economy and making farmers' wallets bulge.
Pinduoduo can also be seen at the Global Agricultural Maker Competition jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization and Zhejiang University. In September of this year, nine participating teams from various countries around the world and dozens of international young agricultural technology entrepreneurs gathered in Hangzhou, China to showcase the "AI+Agriculture" program and its implementation results on site. They use emerging technologies such as AI as tools to solve the "thermal coking problem" in the global agricultural food system.
This year, we collaborated with Zhejiang University to hold the Global Agricultural Maker Competition, aiming to explore solutions using artificial intelligence to address climate change. This is a truly global innovation challenge, and the winners include representatives from Latin America, Africa, and Asia. "Ma Wensen, Director of the Innovation Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization, said that the competition has received support from various forces, and companies like Pinduoduo are key forces in promoting agricultural and food system reform. They not only continue to increase investment in technology and innovation, but also tilt funds and other resources to support industry development.
Technological innovation achieves the future
In order to encourage and assist small-scale producers, women, youth, and indigenous peoples to apply advanced technologies in agricultural production, and jointly improve food security and nutritional status, two reports were released on the opening day of the Science and Innovation Forum.
The first one was completed by the Youth Scientists Group of the World Food Forum, titled "Utilizing Digital Technology to Promote Multi dimensional Participation of Youth in the Transformation of Agricultural Food Systems". It focuses on empowering young people with digital tools and promoting the transformation and development of agricultural food systems through the development or utilization of new technologies.
The second report is titled "Shaping a Sustainable Agricultural Food Future: The Impact of Frontier and Emerging Technologies and Innovations", which introduces and analyzes multiple cutting-edge technologies and innovative achievements and their application environments, and formulates future oriented strategies for policy makers and other major stakeholders. This report draws on the review report released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the French Center for International Cooperation in Agricultural Development Research in 2023, providing valuable insights into emerging technology fields and application scenarios for optimizing innovation paths.
In addition, the agricultural food system plays a key role in sustainable development, and its innovative potential is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change.
At present, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is committed to empirical research to develop practical and feasible solutions aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural development and making positive contributions to global food security and environmental protection.
In addition to the Science and Innovation Forum, the Global Youth Action Forum has provided a broad stage for young pioneers to showcase their talents, enrich their knowledge, broaden their horizons, enhance their understanding of innovative ideas, and lay the foundation for creating a sustainable food future. The "Hand in Hand" investment forum focuses on promoting the sustainable and resilient development of the agricultural food system, continuously advancing investment strategy layout and financial cooperation mechanism construction. The three major forums are interrelated and complementary, working together to create a sustainable agricultural future.
The World Food Forum provides a broad stage for discussing actions, developing partnerships, forming development alliances, and coordinating financing, injecting strong impetus into the transformation of the agricultural food system. Qu Dongyu emphasized the need to fully utilize the bridging platform of the World Food Forum and implement the new ideas and concepts that emerged from exchanges and negotiations into concrete actions. We must continue to support young leaders around the world and safeguard their active actions in their respective environments. Their enthusiasm is the hope for human development and the beacon of social progress
