Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on Wednesday (May 15) that it plans to invest a total of 7.8 billion euros ($8.4 billion) in Germany by 2040 to establish a cloud computing infrastructure specifically for the European region.
Last October, AWS announced that it would launch cloud services for government and highly regulated industry customers in Europe, storing data on servers located in the EU to protect the data privacy of government and heavily regulated industry customers.
At that time, Amazon mentioned that AWS would first be launched in Germany and then provide services to all European customers.
The statement released by AWS on Wednesday indicates that the previous plan has been preliminarily finalized, and the company expects to launch several data centers in Brandenburg, Germany by the end of 2025, which can be used by all customers.
In addition, this new investment will also provide an average of 2800 full-time jobs per year for local companies in Germany.
Currently, more and more enterprises and government clients are using the data centers of large technology companies in the form of public clouds, rather than building their own cloud infrastructure.
Last week, AWS also announced that starting later this month, it will assist Telefonica, a German company, in transferring 1 million 5G customers to its cloud platform.
This marks an important entry for Amazon into the telecommunications market. Mallik Rao, Chief Technology and Information Officer of Telefonica Germany, stated that this transfer will take at least one to two quarters and is expected to transfer at least 30-40% of the company's customer base by 2025 to 2026.
Since the beginning of this year, Amazon has increased its deployment of cloud computing facilities worldwide. In January of this year, Amazon announced plans to invest $15.2 billion in Japan by 2027 to expand its cloud computing infrastructure; Earlier this month, Amazon also announced a $8.88 billion investment to expand its cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore over the next four years.
